Prepping for Finals

Updated: Dec 24, 2020

You're down to the last few weeks and you’re borderline in one or more of your classes. The final could be the difference between an A and a B or passing and failing. So how do you approach it? Here’s a few tips that will set you up for success:

  1. Know the details. You need to know every detail related to your final exam. How much is it weighted? When is it? How will it be administered? What time is it for? If given in person, what building and room location? Is it a cumulative final or nah? If you're a student registered with the office of disability services, make sure your testimony and accommodations are set up.

  2. Work Smarter, not Harder. You have a limited amount of time to get prepared, it’s best to focus on what you don’t know first. Feel like you don’t know anything? Focus on what was covered most recently, it’ll be fresher in your mind.

  3. Get the Inside Scoop: Chances are you can get some inside information from your professor about what chapters will be on the final exam or at least a hint on which chapters you should focus on. If you can get more details about the test like how many questions, topics for open responses, etc. that’ll give you a leg up.

  4. Create a game plan. Once you have all the information you need, you should break down studying into sections. Avoid cramming. You have enough time to know where you can stagger your studying by chapter or unit, but you have to stay on schedule.

  5. Breath. Control what you can control. Put forth your best effort and live with the results. Ask yourself, “what do I need to do to go into the final with confidence?” Also be realistic. It’s not likely that you’re going to get a perfect score on the final, but is it possible to get a 90? An 80? Yep!

Regardless of how you finish, I want you to have tunnel vision. The past is the past. The next three to four weeks is what you should focus on. Focus on your discipline and progress during this time. And remember... You got this!
