I'm Failing At Midterms!?!? Now What?

Updated: Oct 24, 2021

So you’re failing at midterms…Let’s not waste time thinking about why you’re failing, we’ll get to that later. You have a small window of time to salvage your GPA and potentially turn things around so here’s what you need to do:

Check your grades - you can’t make a decision about what to do if you don’t know where you stand. If youre grade aren't yet up to date you want to know this and what those missing grades are.

For any class that you're failing (D or F), meet with that professor immediately - there might be a chance for you to get extra credit, partial credit, or the opportunity to re-do missed assignments, especially if you have extenuating circumstances. You might be nervous to ask, but if you have an extenuating circumstance, your professor might be willing to work with you.

For any class where there is ZERO chance you can get a C or higher, drop it. No since I’m taking two L’s this semester. Although W's (withdrawals) don't look great on your transcript either, it's much more difficult to raise a low GPA the longer you've been in school. A "W" might impact your pass percentage, but that's an easier fix than a potential semester of less than a 2.0.

Create a game plan for success for the rest of the semester - you know exactly what you need to do (or stop doing) to hit your goals. Do better. Maximize your free time. All your energy and efforts need to be focused on your academic success. Get a planner, set alarms, spend time in the library, office hours, tutoring etc. People do things they make the time for.

Get an accountability partner - you don’t have to do it by yourself. Tell a friend or family member what your plan is and have them check in on you, send you motivational texts, or better yet work on stuff with you. Ideally, this is someone you respect enough to make progress and win on what you said you would.
